HIGHEST STOPPING EFFECT

All titanium or titanium composite helmets (hybrids) from ULBRICHTS Protection meet the strict requirements of the Europe-wide recognised Vereinigung der Prüfstellen für Angriffshemmende Materialien und Konstruktionen (VPAM) [Association of Test Centres for Impact-Resistant Materials and Structures]. Depending on model and design, our helmets reliably stop projectiles of different types of weapons, calibres and ammunition from the test stages VPAM 2, 3 and 4 as well as other relevant test rounds. The degree of protection of pure titanium helmets (VPAM 2/3) and titanium composite helmets (VPAM 4+) can be taken to a new level with the help of our additional protective modules: VPAM 6, i.e. 7.62×39 iron core projectiles with full V0 speed.
With the VPAM-6 forehead shield ‘FORTIS’ and the contemporary VPAM-6 visor, we are the first manufacturer in the world to offer light and effective protection against the bullets from a Kalashnikov assault rifle.

LOWEST TRAUMA VALUES

The protective effect of a ballistic helmet is determined by two essential factors: First, the projectile must be stopped reliably by the helmet shell, i.e. it must not penetrate the material.
Secondly, the head must be protected from the kinetic energy of the bullet, which is released on impact on the helmet shell. This second factor is just as vital as the first. If the helmet shell strongly deforms on impact with a projectile, fatal or irreversible head injuries, also called trauma effect, can occur as a result of the enormous blow to the skull. Experts have therefore defined a residual energy value of 25 joules as the maximum amount that can be transferred to the head. This makes it clear that only if both factors are met a ballistic helmet qualifies as an effective head protection against gunfire.
Our helmets have by far the lowest ‘trauma values’ or residual energy values in the world. We achieve these characteristics because we are the only manufacturer able to produce helmets from the high-tech metal titanium. All ULBRICHTS titanium helmets meet the strict requirements of the recognized Association of Test Centres for Impact-Resistant Materials and Structures (VPAM), who defined the maximum residual energy value of 25 joules in its HVN 2009 directive.
With a bullet energy of more than 2000 joules and a speed of around 720 metres per second, the Kalashnikov assault rifle represents an enormous challenge technically. Nevertheless, we have succeeded in bringing the world’s first effective head protection against the long weapon into serial production with the VPAM-6 forehead shield ‘FORTIS’. The new level of protection is achieved by combining a titanium helmet (VPAM 2/3) or a titanium composite helmet (VPAM 4 +) with the modular forehead shield. It can stop a Kalashnikov iron core projectile (7.62 mm x 39) reliably whilst, at the same time, reducing the projectile energy to survivable values below 25 joules – a real milestone in the development of ballistic helmets. Our VPAM-6 visor will soon be ready for serial production too.

MAXIMUM PROTECTIVE SURFACE AREA

Titanium helmets from ULBRICHTS Protection protect almost the helmet´s entire surface area. Their effective ballistic protection extends up to 15 millimetres from the helmet’s edge. This means that the bullet is not only stopped, but also prevents fatal trauma to the helmet wearer (residual energy < 25 joules). Helmets made of other materials only manage this – if at all – down to about 50 millimetres from the edge.
This means that ULBRICHTS titanium helmets have a significantly larger effective protective surface area. The advantage of the material titanium leads to a protective surface area greater by around 40 percent depending on helmet model and cut compared to other materials. The specific protective surface weight (weight divided by protective surface area) is significantly lower in our helmets compared to other helmets. In addition, the high-tech metal has another bonus point: It allows for individual cuts. Together with our customers, we can establish the right ratio between surface area, shape and weight.

BEST INNER HELMET SYSTEM

In an emergency, the helmet must fit, no matter who is wearing it. For this reason, we do not compromise on our interior helmets in terms of safety and comfort. An external rotary knob at the back of the helmet shell allows perfect adjustment of the inner helmet to all head sizes (‘UniSize’) between 48 and 62 centimetres of head circumference. This can be done within seconds – even under stress and whilst wearing gloves. No further adjustments are necessary via helmet pads, which can take up important minutes in an emergency. For this reason, we call the technique ‘quick-size system’.
Moreover, pad-based inner helmet systems with a rotary button for head size adjustment from other manufacturers only cause the head to be pushed forward. This leads to a strong frontal overload and thus undue strain on the cervical spine, especially in smaller and medium sized heads.
By contrast, the sophisticated ‘best-balance’ system of our helmets ensures that the helmet always sits evenly balanced in the center, so that any rear and frontal overload is minimised. This noticeably increases comfort and ensures effective protection.

SMART MODULARITY

Customers have different requirements. Therefore, ULBRICHTS Protection’s titanium helmets are consistently modular in design. Different adapters, rails and mounts allow a quick attachment of different accessories, e.g. for night vision, light or communication. We are particularly proud of the fact that all our helmets can be modularly upgraded and modified:

Protective level VPAM 6: All our helmets can be retrofitted with the VPAM-6 forehead shield ‘FORTIS’ and the protection level can be significantly increased. Thus, easy and effective protection against Kalashnikov fire is, in principle, available to all units.

Neck protection: All our helmets can be equipped with a neck protection adapter.
This enables attachment of ballistic as well as blow and stab neck protection.

Visors: All our helmets can be equipped with the quick-change system. This allows different visors to be attached or removed within a matter of seconds.

This setup provides ULBRICHTS Protection with a modular helmet system that can be adapted to changing requirements depending on unit and deployment. This adaptability is gaining in importance in times of ever-changing tactics and deployment scenarios. In addition, it also contributes to investment security.

DIFFERENT VISORS

Visors complete ballistic head protection. ULBRICHTS Protection develops and manufactures visor types for all purposes. Our range includes:

Our visors are available in different sizes and weights. All types of visors are available with exchangeable anti-scratch protection (for the outside) and anti-fog protection (for the inside) as option. Visors are attached via a bullet-proof mounting system on the outside of the helmet shell. The adapter allows the visor to be attached or removed within a matter of seconds. This quick-change system has been in use for many years in special and patrol units and is available for all ULBRICHTS titanium helmets according to requirements.
